Bali Travel Guide

Bali fits cave temples, rice terraces, surf beaches and quiet villages onto one island. You can spend a morning among carved stone shrines and an evening watching the sun drop into the sea. The south is busy and lively. The east and north are slower, greener and cooler in places.

This guide helps you plan a first trip without the guesswork. It covers the places most visitors want to see, the areas where you can base yourself, and the main kinds of tour. At the end it points you to our planning pages for itineraries, timing and day trips.

Top things to do in Bali

Start with the sights that show Bali's culture. Goa Gajah is a cave temple, and Gunung Kawi is a set of shrines cut into rock. In Ubud, the Monkey Forest, Ubud Palace and Puri Lukisan Museum sit close together, so they work well on foot in one outing. Klungkung Palace and the Bali Museum cover the island's royal and artistic past. Garuda Wisnu Kencana is a huge statue park, and the Bajra Sandhi Monument is a landmark in the capital area. For a change of pace, try the Bali Botanic Garden, calm Sanur Beach, or Lovina Beach on the north coast.

Where to stay in Bali

Pick your area by the kind of trip you want. Ubud suits wellness, culture and rice terraces. Seminyak suits luxury, cafés and beach sunsets. Canggu is for surfers, remote workers and boho beach lovers. Uluwatu has cliff-top views and surf, while Sanur, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran work well for families. If you want quiet, look at Sidemen, Candidasa or Munduk. If you want diving, go to Amed.

A laid-back, boho-chic beach area with surf, restaurants, shops and a big nomad and expat crowd.

Seminyak

A hip, upmarket base with cafés, high-end nightclubs, shopping and beach sunsets.

Tours and excursions

Tours are a simple way to cover distance in a day, especially if you do not want to drive. Most visitors choose a multi-stop sightseeing day. Others prefer something active, like jeeps and quad bikes, or time on the water. Some tours are about culture and craft. Others only move you from one place to another. Pick the type that matches how you like to spend a day.
