Le Mayeur Museum

Le Mayeur Museum is the former home of a Belgian painter who settled on the Sanur shore and filled his house with scenes of Balinese life. The house stands on Jl Hangtuah in Sanur. You walk through the rooms where he lived and worked. The paintings hang in the place that inspired them.

This is a small, quiet museum, and that is much of its charm. It suits a calm morning in Sanur, when you want art and a bit of history without a long queue or a big building. Foreign adults pay Rp 100,000 and children pay Rp 50,000. The museum opens Sunday to Thursday from 08:00 to 15:00 and on Friday from 08:00 to 13:00.

A painter who stayed

Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur came to Bali from Europe and never really left. He made Sanur his home and painted what he saw around him. His subjects were Balinese women, dancers, temple scenes and gardens, all in warm colour.

His wife was Ni Pollok, a Balinese dancer who often appears in his work. Their life together is the thread that runs through the museum. When you look at the canvases, you are looking at the people and the village life he knew every day.

A house you walk through

This is a house museum, so the building matters as much as the pictures. It is built in Balinese style, with carved wooden doors and panels. The painter's rooms and the garden give the paintings a setting that a white gallery cannot.

Take your time in the rooms. The art is part of the home, and the home is part of the story. You get a feel for how an artist lived in Sanur long before the beach became a resort stretch.

Tickets, students and Friday closing

Prices depend on who you are. Foreign adults pay Rp 100,000 and foreign children pay Rp 50,000. Domestic visitors pay Rp 30,000 for adults and Rp 20,000 for children. Domestic or Bali students pay between Rp 5,000 and Rp 20,000.

There is also a separate fee for customary or pre-wedding photo shoots, which runs from Rp 1,000,000 to Rp 2,000,000. Plan your day around Friday, when the museum closes at 13:00 instead of 15:00. On every other open day you have until mid-afternoon.

Sanur Beach and Bajra Sandhi Monument

The museum sits in Sanur, so the beach is the natural next stop. Sanur Beach is nearby, and so is Sunrise Beach. Many visitors see the paintings first and then walk by the sea afterwards. It makes an easy, slow morning.

If you want more museums on the same trip, Bajra Sandhi Monument is a good match. It charges Rp 100,000 for foreign adults, the same as Le Mayeur Museum. Bali Museum is priced the same way, and both it and Le Mayeur Museum close earlier on Fridays. Families can also note that Neka Art Museum, Bali Museum and Le Mayeur Museum all have child prices.
